Health Alert Against Fatal Shigella Dysentery in Kerala

Kozhikode: Acute Dysentery caused by Shigella bacteria has been reported in with one death in Kozhikode. The disease, caused by Shigella dysenteriae bacilli, could be fatal especially in the case of children.

Acute diarrhoeal diseases are common in Kerala during rainy season and two diarrhoeal deaths have been reported from Kozhikode district. Health officials suspect one of them was caused by Shigella bacteria.

The state health department has sent out advisory to doctors that in all cases of fever with diarrhoea, antibiotic treatment be started.
