Laying of Foundation Stone for New Coaching Terminal at Nemam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Railways and Coal, will Lay the Foundation Stone for New Coaching Terminal at Nemam Railway Station through video conferencing from New Delhi at 12.30 hrs. on Thursday, the 07th March, 2019. The local function at Nemam railway station will start at 11.45 hrs. in the presence of Ministers, MPs and MLAs.

Brief on the New Coaching Terminal at Nemam in Thiruvananthapuram Division of Southern Railway
In Thiruvananthapuram City, at present, there are two Coaching Terminals
1. Thiruvananthapuram Central
2. Kochuveli

There was demand for another Coaching Terminal in Thiruvananthapuram City at Nemam since, due to paucity of land at Thiruvananthapuram Central, there is no scope for further expansion of yard. Members of Parliament and Legislative Assembly as well as public have been demanding for this facility so that more number of trains can originate/terminate in Thiruvananthapuram City. The north bound trains can start from Nemam, which is on the southern side of Thiruvananthapuram city, with a brief stopover at Thiruvananthapuram Central Station.

Accordingly, Ministry of Railways have sanctioned the work of new Coaching Terminal at Nemam as an Umbrella work under the Traffic Facility Plan head vide item no 70 of Pink Book for 2018-19.The estimated cost of this work is Rs.148.32 Crores (excluding land cost).

Facilities proposed to be created at Nemam as part of this New Coaching Terminal at Nemam are:-
1. Five (5) Stabling Lines
2. One (1) Common Loop
3.One (1) Down Main Line and One (1) Up Main Line
4. Two (2) Platforms
5. Three (3) ROBs and One (1) Aquaduct reconstruction
6. One (1) Foot Over Bridge
7. One (1) Shunting Neck
8. Related Signallingand Electrical works

This requires acquisition of 7.18 Hectares of private land at an estimated cost of Rs 142.84 Crores, for which request has been placed on Government of Kerala on 26.03.2018.For this purpose a Land Acquisition cell has been formed in Thiruvananthapuram District.

Tender for the work of providing Main Lines, Common Loop, two platforms and reconstruction of ROBs in Nemam Yard has been awarded at a cost of Rs 15.50 Crores and work has just commenced (within available land).This work can be completed in 12 months.
