KOCHI:
With music in their genes and the passion for it honed by years of hard work, sibling singers Shabnam and Shifas Basheer sang in perfect symmetry to keep the audiences enthralled at the weekly music show Arts and Medicine, organized by the Kochi Biennale Foundation (KBF) at the Government General Hospital here today.
The singer duo belongs to a family which is deeply interested in music and gives full support to them to pursue their passion. Basheer Ismail, the father of the singers, owns a business at Palluruthy.
Shabnam , and her brother Shifas are members of playback singer and actor Vineeth Sreenivasan’s music band. Both the brother and the sister have been part of several reality shows on leading Malayalam TV channels. Shabnam was the semi-finalist of ‘Asianet Mylanchi Season 4’ and was ‘Mylanchi Little Champion’ groomer and also ‘Asianet Super Voice’ groomer. Shifas was the semi-finalist of Gandharva Sangeetham (2014) on Kairali TV.
During their 90-minute performance at the 225th episode, the singers crooned a total of 17 soulful songs in Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi. Six duets were woven in between the melodious numbers of yesteryears. ‘Tu hi ye Mujhko Bata’, ‘Njanum Njanumentalum’ , ‘Aa Oruthi Avaloruthi’, ‘Manikya Malaraya’ , ‘ Bheegi Bheegi’ and ‘Padavalu’ were all strung together in melodious synchronization as the brother-sister duo showed their singing prowess with a huge impact on the audiences comprising patients, medical staff and bystanders.
“Singing comes naturally to both of us; our parents support us as they themselves adore music. The guidance of people who love us unconditionally and love of the audience for whom we sing, takes us a long way in the direction of our dreams,” Shabnam said.
Shifas was effusive in his praise of the organizers of the programme. “We are indebted to the organisers and convenors of this programme for giving us a chance to experience a different stage here at the hospital,” he added.
The all-Wednesday therapeutic music programme is usually held in the green lawns of the hospital and draws a considerable audience. It is a joint initiative of KBF and Mehboob Memorial Orchestra, and is sponsored by CAFS (Casino Air Caterers and Flight Services).
