20 Girls Tie Nuptial Knot in Sri Kurumba Trust’s Dowry-less Social Wedding

VADAKKENCHERRY:
Sri Kurumba Educational and Charitable Trust, the corporate social responsibility arm of Sobha Ltd., has conducted a dowry-less social wedding ceremony at Vadakkencherry in Palakkad on Saturday.

In the first social wedding ceremony of the year conducted by the trust, which held at Sree Kurumba Kalyanamandapam at Moolancode, 20 girls from economically backward families tied nuptial knot. P. N. C. Menon, Chairman Emeritus, Sobha Ltd. and his wife Sobha Menon, blessed the newly-wed couples. With this, the number of girls who got married under the social wedding ceremony of the trust, started in 2003, increased to 630. The girls were selected from 2500 BPL families in Vadakkencherry, Kannambra Kizhakkenchery panchayats adopted by the trust.

All the expenses of the wedding, including 4.5 sovereigns of gold for each girl and clothes for both brides and grooms, were borne by the trust. The girls and their parents were given a pre-marriage counseling with an emphasis on health, hygiene and behaviour. In addition, the trust will periodically monitor their marriage life and offer support and guidance if required.
