KOLKATA:
A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Bay of Bengal early Tuesday morning, sending tremors across Odisha and West Bengal, including Kolkata. The quake, which hit near Puri at 6:10 am, startled residents but caused no reported damage or casualties.
People in Berhampur, Balasore, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, and Rourkela experienced the tremors, with many sharing their experiences on social media.
“I felt my room shaking in Rourkela,” one resident tweeted, while another in Cuttack said, “I woke up to my bed shaking.”
In Kolkata, the tremors led to momentary panic, with users posting: “Quite a big jerk! Did anyone else feel it?”
Odisha, which falls under seismic zones II and III, is moderately prone to earthquakes, with 14 districts classified as at-risk areas. Kolkata, also in seismic zone III, occasionally feels tremors from quakes originating in Nepal or the Northeast.
Authorities have assured that there is no immediate threat, but residents are advised to remain cautious.
