Amrita Hospital Kochi Launches Kerala’s First Advanced Centre for Neuro Endoscopy Surgeries

KOCHI:
Amrita Hospital Kochi proudly unveils Kerala’s inaugural advanced centre for neuro endoscopy, a pioneering initiative in the field of endoscopic neurosurgery – Amrita Centre for Neuro Endoscopy (ACNE).

While neurosurgical endoscopy has been available for some time, Amrita Hospitals have continually evolved to meet international standards and achieve advancements in the field. The practice has diversified into specialized divisions such as skull base endoscopy, cranial endoscopy, spine endoscopy, robotic endoscopy, and paediatric endoscopy, each managed by experts. This specialization ensures highly targeted treatment within each division, delivering the best outcomes for patients.

The collaboration between the Department of Neurosurgery, ENT, and Head and Neck Department has set an exemplary standard of care for brain and head and neck disorders treated through endoscopy.

Dr. Prem Nair, Group Medical Director of Amrita Hospitals, emphasizes the significance of this advancement, stating, “Amrita Hospital Kochi’s Advanced Neuro Endoscopy Centre represents a major leap in minimally invasive neurosurgery, reaffirming our enduring commitment to delivering world-class healthcare to Kerala and beyond. We pioneered robotic endoscopy in Southeast Asia, completing over 250 successful cranial endoscopic procedures and establishing a high standard of neurosurgical care.”

The benefits of Advanced Neuro Endoscopy are multifaceted, as highlighted by Dr. Sajesh K Menon, Head of Neurosurgery at Amrita Hospital, Kochi who explains, “Diseases that previously required extensive skull openings can now be managed with minimally invasive procedures, the same applies to spinal disorders. These procedures involve smaller incisions, leading to quicker recoveries. Patients undergoing these treatments face reduced infection risks and increased safety. A significant number can now leave the hospital on the same day as their surgery, reducing hospitalization duration and associated costs. These innovative techniques offer cost-effective solutions for individuals in need of advanced medical care.” The hospital also envisions applying these groundbreaking methods in deformative surgery.

Dr. Suhas Udayakumaran, a Pediatric neurosurgeon, emphasizes that endoscopy significantly improves outcomes for many pediatric intracranial or brain issues. “It’s less traumatic, minimally invasive, reduces recovery and rest time, yet achieves effects comparable to traditional open procedures like tumor removal and treating Hydrocephalus, a neurological condition. Endoscopy can transform a child’s life, reducing suffering, long-term risks, and ultimately enabling better performance.”

To commemorate the launch of the Advanced Centre for Neuro Endoscopy, Amrita Hospital collaborates with The Neuroendoscopy Society of India (NESI) to present a two-day academic program titled “NESI / Amrita Centre for Neuroendoscopy (ACNE) Midterm Skull Base Endoscopy Cadaver Workshop, Mini Symposium, and Live Surgery Sessions,” scheduled for September 30 and October 1, 2023.

Dr. Ayyadurai R, Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, and a key member of the Advanced Centre for Neuroendoscopy at Amrita Hospital,Kochi provides insights into the symposium’s highlights: “Participants will have a unique opportunity to master advanced techniques in endoscope-assisted endonasal surgery and enhance their decision-making abilities for endonasal skull base approaches. This workshop offers hands-on experience using imported cadaver heads from the USA, replicating real patient scenarios. Participants will benefit from personalized learning guided by seasoned course directors. The second day includes live spinal endoscopy surgeries demonstrated by experts in the field, providing invaluable insights into these cutting-edge procedures.”
