Applications invited for Sahapedia-UNESCO Fellowship 2019

Sahapedia, an open online encyclopaedic resource on Indian arts and culture, today announced the third edition of its Fellowship programme with UNESCO, sustaining an initiative that has produced a string of quality research and documentation works on some interesting and mostly lesser-known facets of Indian art, culture and heritage.

The Sahapedia-UNESCO Fellowship for 2019 supported by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, will carry an amount of Rs. 40,000 awarded to each fellow. The ministry has provided the grant through ‘Financial Assistance to Cultural Organisations with National Presence’ under the umbrella scheme of Kala Sanskriti Vikas Yojana. Applications will be open from May 15 to June 30, 2019.

Entries are to be submitted in English, Hindi, Bangla, Tamil and Malayalam. Post-doctoral scholars, doctoral candidates and post-graduates may apply. Applicants can choose categories pertaining to documentation, research or a combination of the two for their entries.

The fellowship support research in diverse fields of art, culture, tradition and heritage of India.

“We are enthused by the Fellowship initiative that has facilitated students, scholars, historians, sociologists, architects, heritage enthusiasts, social works and journalists to carry out documentation and research work in various aspects of Indian culture in English, Hindi and several regional languages,” said Dr Sudha Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director, Sahapedia.

“It has encouraged both young scholars and field practitioners to engage with India’s cultural heritage. In particular, it has supported individuals with their work on communities and practices that have largely remained obscured and thus bring them to the notice of a wider public,” she added.

For the second round of Fellowships in 2018, a total of 66 Designated Fellows carried out their documentation / research work on a diverse themes and topics in regional languages in a span of six months. It also provided researchers and scholars a digital platform to publish their work in regional languages.
