KOCHI:
Singers PN Sunil and Priya Sumesh may be hailing from different backgrounds, but the duo combined in perfect harmony to belt out some glorious Malayalam songs at Government General Hospital, Ernakulam to regale the patients and hospital staff.
The119th episode of the Kochi Biennale Foundation’s (KBF) popular ‘Arts and Medicine’ musical show, held at the hospital every Wednesday in association with Lakeshore Hospital and Research Centre Limited and Mehboob Memorial Orchestra, drew a fair crowd as the singers crooned the popular Malayalam songs with great finesse to demonstrate the healing power of music.
Sunil set the tone by singing the evergreen Malayalam song, ‘Mamangam’, originally sung by K J Yesudas, followed by ‘Kayamboo’, from the 1969 movie ‘Nadhi’, and around a dozen songs which evoked the nostalgic musical mood in the minds of the people gathered around.
In particular, the duet ‘Valkannezhuthiya’ from the 1993 movie ‘Paithrukam’ earned a huge applause from the audience. The Tamil song, ‘Senthoorapoove’, a popular duet by Ilayaraja and S Janaki from the film ‘PathinaruVayathiniley’, was justly recreated by singer Priya.
P N Sunil, a trained professional singer who hails from Vaduthala, has been part of Sangamkala Kochi and other music troupes. Priya Sumesh from Varapuzha has proved her multilingual singing prowess in different music groups, including Kalabhavan.
Together, the duo recreated some quality music which captivated the audience and had them rooted on the spot for the hour-long programme.
