  • Beyond Sight: The Kerala Innovation Redefining Spiritual Inclusion

By NE Reporter on April 1, 2026

    THRISSUR:
For centuries, the “Way of the Cross” has been a deeply visual pilgrimage. From the grand cathedrals of Europe to small parish churches across the globe, the fourteen stations are traditionally depicted through paintings or sculptures, inviting the faithful to look, meditate, and pray. But for the millions living with visual impairments, this spiritual journey has often been one of exclusion—until now.

In a historic milestone for inclusive design, the Puthenpalli Church in Thrissur has been transformed into a global beacon of accessibility following the formal inauguration of the world’s first fully accessible Stations of the Cross this past week. The project stands as a profound testament to the idea that technology is at its finest when guided by radical empathy.

This breakthrough was not born in a traditional design studio, but within the SAMNITA Social Inclusion Lab at Jyothi Engineering College. Under the expert mentorship of the Kerala-based startup Punarjeeva Technology Solutions, a team of young engineers set out to solve a fundamental human problem: how to “see” a spiritual story without the benefit of sight.

The resulting installation is a multi-sensory masterpiece that utilizes a sophisticated blend of high-tech and high-touch features. Each station now features precision-engineered 3D tactile reliefs, allowing users to trace the narrative of the Passion through touch. To achieve this, the team utilized Artificial Intelligence to optimize tactile textures, ensuring they are distinct enough for sensitive fingertips to interpret complex scenes. Furthermore, integrated QR codes trigger immersive audio descriptions in both Malayalam and English, providing spiritual reflection, while tactile floor paths and Braille inscriptions allow blind individuals to move between stations with total independence.

What truly set this project apart during its unveiling was the methodology revealed by its creators. Grounded in the social innovation mantra “Nothing about us without us,” the Samnita Lab did not merely design a system for the blind; they designed it with them. Members of the visually impaired community served as core collaborators throughout the process, testing prototypes and providing critical feedback on the readability of the tactile reliefs. This participatory approach ensured that the final installation, blessed this week, was not just a technical marvel but a deeply functional tool for personal devotion.

Robin Tommy, the visionary behind the Samnita Social and Inclusive Innovation Lab, views the success of this project as a blueprint for the future of higher education. By aligning the curriculum with the World Economic Forum’s 2030 future skills, the lab is teaching students that the most important tool in an engineer’s kit isn’t a coding language—it is the ability to collaborate and think creatively about human dignity. During the event, Fr. Jose Kannampuzha, Academic Director of Jyothi Engineering College, noted that religious experiences should be a universal right, praising the students for transforming technology through what he termed “empathy engineering.”

As the world moves toward more inclusive urban environments, the Puthenpalli Church project serves as a poignant reminder that inclusion must extend to the soul. While global society has made significant strides in accessible transport and workplaces, spiritual and cultural landmarks have often lagged behind. By integrating AI, tactile artistry, and human-centric design, this small lab in Kerala has set a new international standard for how heritage sites can serve all of humanity. As Holy Week begins, the “Way of the Cross” in Thrissur is no longer just a path of sorrow; it has become a path of belonging, open to everyone, regardless of how they see the world.
