NEW DELHI:
The Congress party found itself cornered yet again after senior leader P Chidambaram publicly admitted that the future of the INDIA bloc ‘is not so bright,’ triggering a fierce attack from the BJP. His comment at a book launch in Delhi has given fresh ammunition to the ruling party, which wasted no time in questioning Congress’s leadership of the opposition alliance.
The BJP labelled the INDIA bloc as a ‘greed-driven coalition’ and ‘group of corrupt leaders,’ citing Chidambaram’s own admission as proof of internal disarray. This comes even as the Congress is still grappling with backlash from Shashi Tharoor’s recent remarks supporting PM Modi’s policies during the India-Pakistan standoff statements the party officially distanced itself from.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh clarified that Tharoor’s views were personal and not reflective of the party’s stand. Yet, the timing of Chidambaram’s critical take has further deepened the crisis within the opposition camp.
BJP leaders are now questioning the Congress’s capacity to lead the INDIA bloc, especially when senior leaders themselves appear disillusioned. Adding to the internal strain, Congress leader Udit Raj suggested that Chidambaram should contribute to the party by engaging with grassroots dialogues instead of airing doubts publicly.
As the INDIA bloc faces credibility questions, the Congress now faces a fresh challenge containing internal dissent while fending off relentless attacks from the BJP.
