THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
In an effort to encourage cultivation of medicinal plants by the local population, a project was initiated today to distribute medicinal plant saplings in Venganoor. The project was kicked off jointly by the city-based Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA), Medicinal Plants Board, and the Venganoor Grama Panchayat.
Venganoor Satheesh, President, Venganoor Grama Panchayat, formally inaugurated the distribution to saplings at a function organised at the SNUP School Kattachalkuzhi today. Dr Radhakrishnan, CEO, Medicinal Plants Board, who elaborated on various aspects of the project, said that in the first phase, the project would aim at helping the people of Venganoor Grama Panchayat to plant medicinal plant saplings so that they could be grown, collected and marketed on a commercial basis.
The project which has the support of the NREGA scheme will prompt the people of the panchayat to cultivate as many as 10 varieties of medicinal plants.
