NEW DELHI:
The Congress party has announced its decision to challenge the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025, in the Supreme Court “very soon,” asserting that the legislation infringes upon constitutional principles.
Jairam Ramesh, Congress General Secretary Incharge of Communication, Publicity, and Media, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday to reaffirm the party’s commitment to contesting various legislative changes introduced by the Narendra Modi-led government.
In his post, Ramesh highlighted a series of ongoing legal battles that the Congress has undertaken, including its challenges to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019, amendments to the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005, and the Conduct of Election Rules, 2024. Additionally, the party is actively defending the integrity of the Places of Worship Act, 1991, which is also under scrutiny in the Supreme Court.
“The INC will very soon be challenging in the Supreme Court the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025. We will continue to resist all assaults on the principles, provisions, and practices enshrined in the Constitution of India,” Ramesh stated.
The Congress party’s opposition to the Waqf Amendment Bill reflects its broader campaign against what it perceives as systematic attempts to undermine constitutional safeguards. Party leaders have reiterated their commitment to protecting minority rights and ensuring that legislative changes adhere to established constitutional principles.
Further developments are awaited as the Congress prepares to file its petition in the Supreme Court.
