After 12 weeks of action, Sunshine School were crowned the inaugural FC Goa Junior Gaurs U-10 League Champions. Sunshine came from a goal down to overcome Assumpta Convent with a scoreline
of 3-1 in what a keenly fought contest, in front of a healthy crowd at the Nagoa Village Panchayat Ground in Verna.
Earlier in the afternoon, Assumpta Convent had booked their place in the final with a comfortable 2-0 victory over St. Josephs, Chandor. On the other side of the draw, Sunshine School ran out convincing winners over St. Thomas High School of Aldona with a scoreline of 3-0. The two losing semi-finalists faced off in a playoff, with St. Joseph’s prevailing by a scoreline of 3-2 to finish the tournament in 3rd place.
The tournament was launched on the 2nd of December at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda with FC Goa’s entire senior team and staff in attendance. The Junior Gaurs League, which is the first of its kind in the state, is an initiative of the FC Goa Grassroots Program which saw 63 schools take part in the competition with 8 different venues across Goa playing hosts.
A total of 225 matches were played over the 12 weeks with 882 players taking part in the league, where a total of 545 goals were scored. Kyle Gaspar of Sunshine School was named as the Man of the match in the finals and The King’s School were awarded the Fair Play Trophy.
After the resounding of the U-10 league, FC Goa has gone ahead with plans for the Junior Gaurs U-12 League an the first round of fixtures will kick off on the 22nd February.
