GV Raja Sports School Embarks on a Big Revamp Course

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
Kerala’s premier sports education institution G V Raja Sports School is all set for a major revamp of its infrastructure with Minister for Industries, Sports and Youth Affairs E P Jayarajan launching work on projects totalling over Rs 15 crore on its campus at Aruvikkara near here on February 15.

The works to be completedy within the time-frame of one year include laying of synthetic track of international standards, a synthetic hockey turf and building a synthetic football turf on the campus.

With the completion of these projects, the premier sports school that has moulded many of state ’s sports personalities will be fully equipped to meet the present and future requirements, including hosting of key events and imparting training to budding talents in a host of disciplines.

At the function to be held at 5 pm, Dr A Sampath, MP, K S Sabarinathan, MLA, District Panchayat president V K Madhu, Dr A Jayatilak, Principal Secretary Sports and Youth Affairs, and Sanjayan Kumar, Director, Sports and Youth Affairs, will attend. The Government has given administrative sanction of Rs 6.38 crore for the synthetic rack, Rs 4.65 crore to the hockey turf and Rs 4.33 crore for the football turf.

The works have been awarded Hyderabad-based Great Sports Infra Private Ltd, by inviting global tenders for each of them. The material for laying the track will be imported from Germany while those for the hockey turf and football turf from France and Canada respectively.

The institution was set up in memory of Lt Col P R Godha Varma Raja, who pioneered promotion of modern sports in the state. The Committee on Sports and Youth Affairs of the Kerala Legislative Assembly had in its reports stressed the need to improve the quality of facilities at the G V Raja Sports Schools. The recommendations of the panel have been enshrined in the Government’s Sports Policy. The Sports Engineering wing of Department of Sports and Youth Affairs (DSYA) has drawn up a meticulous action plan to achieve the stated objectives.
