Rio de Janeiro: Dipa Karmakar, the 22-year-old Gymnast from Tripura finished eighth in the qualifying stage in Artistic (Vaults) Gymnastics and entered the finals at Rio Olympics, on Monday.
She made a mark by performing the highly difficult Produnova – a double front somersault vault – in Gymnastics. This item is so risky that the gymnast may remain paralyzed for life if calculations go wrong.
The vault is named after Russian athlete Yelena Produnova, who tried it first in 1999. Only four other gymnasts have tried it since.
Her 23rd birthday falls on August 9.
Dipa will compete in the finals on August 14.
