HOOGLY:
BSF constable Purnam Kumar Shaw returned to an emotional hero’s welcome in Rishra, Hooghly on Friday, days after his release from Pakistan’s custody following 21 days of detention.
Shaw, who hails from West Bengal, was apprehended by Pakistan Rangers on April 23 after he accidentally crossed the Zero Line in Punjab’s Ferozepur sector while guarding farmers. His detention came a day after the Pahalgam terror attack.
After weeks of diplomatic effort, Shaw was released on May 14 as part of a mutual exchange of detained soldiers at the Wagah-Attari border.
“It feels like Diwali for us,” said his wife Rajni Shaw. “We were scared when he was captured, but today, we’re just grateful. I want him to continue his duty and serve the nation.”
A beaming Shaw, arriving at Howrah station, expressed relief and joy. “I had spoken to my wife over the phone, but now I’ll see my family in person,” he said.
The local municipality later organized a grand rally in his honour. His mother, Devanti Devi, said the family was preparing a special feast. “He’s home, and we’re cooking all his favourite dishes,” she said with a smile.
