Homicide Rate For Canadian Indigenous Victims 7 Times Higher

According to Statistics Canada, the homicide rate of Indigenous Victims was seven Times greater than that of non-Indigenous Canadians in 2020.

According to Xinhua news agency, Statistics Canada reported that the Indigenous population has a homicide rate of 10.05 per 100,000 people while non-Indigenous people have 1.41 per 100,000.

Statistics Canada reported that there were 743 homicides by police in 2020.This is the highest number ever recorded in Canada for homicides since 1991 and 56 more than in 2019.It means that Canada’s homicide rate has risen 7 percent from 1.83 homicides to 100,000 people in 2019 to 1.95 to 100,000 in 2020.

This is the highest national homicide rate ever since 2005.

There were 201 Victims of homicide from indigenous communities, which is 28% of all homicide Victims in Canada for 2020.

The number of Victims among indigenous men jumped 32 percent, or up 24%, to 163, compared to 2019, which is the highest level since 2014, when data on indigenous identity was first available.

Homicide rates for Indigenous men were nearly eight Times Higher than those of non-Indigenous men (2.14 per 100,000) and 16.50 per 100,000.

The rates for women were almost five-and-half Times Higher for 3.76 Indigenous women per 100,000 than 0.69 non-Indigenous women.

Indigenous families and communities have suffered greatly from colonization, including the establishment of work camps and residential schools.

Many Indigenous people are subject to institutional and social marginalization, discrimination, and other forms of trauma and violence.

This includes intergenerational trauma, gender-based violence, and gender-based trauma.

Many people find themselves in difficult economic and social circumstances.

These factors play an important role in the over-representation Indigenous peoples in criminal justice systems and as Victims of crime.
