NEW DELHI:
India woke to a wave of shock and sorrow on Thursday as renowned wrestler Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement from the sport. This decision followed her disqualification from the 50kg category gold medal bout in the Olympics for weighing 100gm over the limit.
Her announcement has garnered an outpouring of support from the sports community. Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Bajrang Punia led the tributes, stating, “Vinesh, you did not lose but yet you have been defeated. For us, you will always be a winner.”
Other prominent voices, such as Sakshi Malik, shared similar sentiments, calling Vinesh a role model and expressing that her struggle symbolizes the fight of every daughter in India. Calls for her to reconsider her decision and aim for future goals, including the 2028 Olympics, have been made by her coach Mahavir Phogat and former sports minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore.
