Kid Scientists Charm Bala Krishi Sastra Congress

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
Children’s passion for agriculture and science was on display at the Seventh Kerala Bala Sastra Krishi Congress that began in Thiruvananthapuram today. Students who came all the way from various places in the state put on array a variety of products and experiments, much to the fascination of visitors who thronged the stalls on Day One. It was a show of love for agriculture and science, when the stalls evoked a charm that promised a sparkling future for farm related activities in the state.

Oru Nellu oru Meen
The ‘Oru Nellu oru Meen‘ project that was displayed by the Student Police Cadets from the Government VHSS, Vithura, stood apart as a thought that would go a long way in safeguarding the agrarian culture of Kerala. Based on the practice of the farmers in Kuttanad, the Oru Nellu, Oru Meen’ project brings to the fore the significance of fish farming in post harvested paddy fields of the state. As the initial phase of the project, the students had started growing fish of the likes of Grass Carp in 50 cents of a post-harvested paddy field. The project was inaugurated by Agriculture Minister V S Sunil Kumar. Banking on the theme of “Food Security – Security for Humanity’, the project has been envisaged to ensure availability of rice and fish for the mid-day meal scheme of the school.

Solar Cow

Yet another project that lured eye balls was the Solar Cow model put on show by Gokul and Anand of the Government VHSS, Poovachal. The idea envisages generation of clean energy by attaching solar panels on the cows that go grazing during the day time under the blazing sun. It is envisioned that such a project could generate close to 12 volts of electricity, which would in turn be enough to power a dairy farm.
