KMB-2025: Workshop on Joy of Learning Calls for Experiential Learning

A workshop on ‘The Joy of Learning: How We Approach Learning’ in Goa-based The Learning Centre (TLC), conducted at the ABC Art Room, Water Metro, Fort Kochi, made a strong case for placing emphasis on learning rooted in lived experiences and not solely on conventional classroom settings.

The workshop, facilitated by students of TLC, highlighted collaborative interactions among participants and facilitators for experiential learning, emphasizing practical, personal, and reflective engagement rather than abstract theory.

As part of the programme, the student facilitators coordinated short activities and games for participants to gain an experiential understanding of TLC’s learning methods.

“At TLC, we try to approach learning more holistically—seeing it as an interdisciplinary way of understanding life itself, where science, society, and language naturally intersect,” said Kaushiek Pranoo, facilitator at TLC.

“It’s been heartening to see curiosity unfold so naturally—children drawing, playing, and learning together without being instructed to do so. That’s the spirit of TLC: education not as preparation for life, but as life itself,” he added.

Leela Sluggett, a 16-year-old student facilitator, said, “People were initially unsure about our non-traditional structure, especially since we don’t strictly follow textbooks or every syllabus.”

She added: “But once we spoke about self-motivation and taking responsibility for our learning, many were open and curious about the process.”

Participants were introduced to TLC’s multidisciplinary and experiential learning practices that encourage learners to reflect on their role in the world through the values of respect, responsibility, and reciprocity.
