Kochi Aster Medcity Receives Recognition for Mother and Child-friendly Hospital Initiatives

KOCHI:
Aster Medcity received MBFHI (Mother and Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative) certification by the State government. MBFHI accreditation was instituted by the state government in association with the National Health Mission to ensure quality and friendly healthcare for mother and child and to promote breastfeeding. Health Minister Veena George awarded the accreditation certificate to Jayesh V Nair, Head of Operations, Aster Medicity and M.S Saneesh, Pediatric Manager at Aster Medcity during the state-level inauguration of Breastfeeding Week.

The accreditation certificate is issued after tests conducted based on 130 check points including 10 standards of UNICEF and WHO. Apart from the state government allied professional bodies including the National Health Mission (NHM) and their partners Indian Academy for Pediatrics (IAP) Kerala, and Kerala University of Health Services (KUHS) were also part of the selection procedure.

Aster Medcity’s efforts in promoting breastfeeding involved the establishment of a dedicated committee and the development of a comprehensive breastfeeding policy that prioritizes the well-being of both mothers and children. To ensure constant support, a dedicated full-time breastfeeding counselor is available to address any questions or concerns expectant mothers may have during pregnancy and after childbirth.

The hospital has breastfeeding support groups to facilitate mothers’ journey offering a valuable opportunity for mothers to discuss their concerns, seek advice, and share their experiences with one another. In addition to support groups, Aster Medcity regularly conducts breastfeeding awareness classes for its employees and ensures the availability of various medical specialists, including neonatologists, pediatricians, obstetricians, and other experts, along with dedicated staff nurses. This comprehensive approach ensures that mothers and children receive the best possible care and support throughout their breastfeeding journey at Aster Medcity.
