Discussions and deliberations on the second day of the three-day International Seminar on Health, Human Rights and IPR, being held at the National University of Advanced Legal Studies, winded up successfully.
Law students, scholars and many among the legal fraternity flocked into the venue of the Seminar to lend their ears to the pertinent and futuristic aspects of Information and Communication Technology and related Human rights. The first technical session of the day commenced at 9.00a.m and dealt with ‘Access to ICT: Facets of Human Rights Involved’. The session was chaired by Dr. P.S Seema (Director, School of Legal Studies- Cusat).
Resource persons for the first session were Dr. Meena Kumari S (Asst. Professor,GLC, Ernakulam) and Sushma Susan George (Asst. Professor, Bharat Mata Law College, Ernakulam). It was a fruitful session involving students as well as faculty of a plethora of law schools and eminent jurists imparting knowledge on different subtopics of the session through paper presentations.
The second technical session included topics under ‘Individual Rights in relation to ICT and Changes brought by ICT’. Dr. Arghya Sengupta (Research Director, Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy) chaired this session while Dr. Manoj Varghese (Former Director, Facebook India) and Shanmugam D Jayan (Visiting Faculty, NUALS & CUSAT,) acted as resource persons. The session extended to discuss about the state policy regarding Information and Communication Technology and the status of online data as a property of economic value.
The afternoon session concentrated on ‘ICT and New Challenges to Established Contours of IP”. The Chair for the session was Dr. Bismi Gopalakrishnan( Director,Dr. B.R Ambedkar Chair, Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice) while Dr. Jill Bronfman(Adjunct Professor in Data Privacy Law, U.C Hastings College) and Adv. Benoy Kadavan (Specialist in IP Law) were resource persons for the same.
The final session had Dr. S.S Girishankar(Asst. Professor,GLC, Ernakulam) as the chair and Aathira Raju (Asst. Professor, School of Legal Studies, Central University of Kerala) as the resource person on the topic, ‘ Access to ICT & Governance: Linkages, Lessons and Leeways.’ The Seminar will end on 13th October 2017.
