NEW DELHI:
The Rajya Sabha witnessed high drama on Thursday following contentious remarks made by Samajwadi Party leader Ramji Lal Suman about the revered Rajput ruler Rana Sanga. The remarks sparked outrage among members from various parties, demanding a formal apology and immediate retraction.
The controversy erupted during a discussion on the portrayal of historical figures in academic literature, where Suman’s comments were perceived as disrespectful towards Rana Sanga, the legendary 16th-century warrior known for his valour and resistance against foreign invasions.
Representatives from Rajput community-based parties, along with BJP and Congress members, voiced their anger, condemning Suman’s statements and accusing him of insulting a historical icon revered by millions. The heated exchange prompted the Rajya Sabha Chairman to intervene and appeal for order in the house.
“It is unacceptable to malign the legacy of a warrior who embodies the pride and heritage of our country. We demand an unconditional apology,” asserted BJP MP Rajendra Singh Rathore, expressing the sentiments of his party.
Congress leader Pratap Singh Kachhwaha echoed the outrage, urging Suman to reconsider his words and respect India’s rich historical heritage.
Although Suman attempted to clarify his comments, stating that they were taken out of context, his explanation did little to quell the agitated members, resulting in multiple adjournments of the house.
Political observers suggest that the controversy may have far-reaching implications, especially in regions where Rana Sanga is venerated as a cultural icon. With elections on the horizon, parties are treading cautiously to avoid offending public sentiments.
