Sabarimala: Gender Justice is Endangered, Observes Supreme Cour

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday made it clear that it would decide on the right of women to enter Sabarimala temple on the basis of constitutional principles and not on customary practices.

“We will like to understand as to what right they have to forbid a woman from entering the temple, a public place,” the bench comprising justices Dipak Mishra, V Gopala Gowda and Kurian Joseph said.

“We will now only be guided by the rationale under the Constitution. The gravity of this petition is that gender justice is endangered,” the court said.

The court made these observations while hearing a PIL, filed by Indian Young Lawyers’ Association seeking the right of women to enter the Sabarimala temple in Kerala.
