New Delhi: Citizens across the nation are in tears as family budgets are hit by the sudden surge in the prices of three essentials – Tomato, Potato and Dal.
Tomatoes are selling at Rs 100/kg in almost all markets. Potato prices hover around Rs 20/kg in the north while it is between Rs 32 to 35 in Kerala. Arhar dal costs Rs 170/kg while Urad dal is selling at Rs 196/kg.
The uncontrolled rise in the prices of these essentials, except potato, has been due to the shortfall in production.
The situation became worse as the Government failed to build sufficient stocks in view of the shortfall and growing prices.
The rise in the prices of dal is not an overnight phenomenon. Arhar dal prices doubled and urad dal prices has increased by around 120% in the last two years.
