KOCHI:
Professor S Varghese, former member of the Kerala State Human Rights Commission, was honored by Pope Leo XIV, head of the Catholic Church, for his contribution to the community with the Benemerenti medal.
He received the honor from Archbishop Varghese Chakkalakkal, head of the Latin Catholic community and President of Kerala Catholic Bishops Council , at the community conclave in Kochi. The Medal is one of the highest papal honors bestowed upon the non-clergy.
Prof Varghese was principal of University College Trivandrum and deputy director of collegiate education in Kerala. He was also state president of Government College Teachers Organization, and State headquarters commissioner of Bharat Scouts and Guides. He has also held various other prominent positions.
