THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
KIMS Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram has provided an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) machine at Thiruvananthapuram central station under the hospital’s CSR initiative.
AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening critical cardiac conditions (Sudden Cardiac Arrests) and is able to treat them through Defibrillation; the application of electricity which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm and recovery of affected person. The AEDs can be used by any trained person and KIMS hospital has conducted training classes for Railway and Kerala Police staff at Thiruvananthapuram central station today.
Indian railway passengers will benefit from the initiative as studies prove that during cardiac arrest, public access defibrillators such as AED’s provided at railway stations etc improve survival rate. Even when operated by laypersons, they have the highest likelihood of leading to survival of cardiac arrest victims.
