MUMBAI:
One of the most prominent student urban design competitions will open for entries again in 2018. The Schindler Global Award (SGA) will focus on the impact and implications of current and future mobility systems on urban development in one of the most globally significant cities – Mumbai.
The SGA is a one-of-a-kind urban design competition that encourages students to put their skills to the test. As the second largest city in the world, Mumbai presents many challenges, offering participating students the chance to engage with spatial, social and strategic topics. Mumbai requires integrated and sustainable urban systems that make the benefits of the city accessible to all its inhabitants. The megacity is also a benchmark for South Asia and beyond. How it approaches continuing growth and manages development processes is relevant at every scale, from neighborhood to national and global.
The competition will begin in mid-July 2018 with entries due at the end of January 2019. The SGA 2018/2019 is open to final-year bachelor’s and all master’s degree students of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and planning, from degree-granting educational institutions worldwide.
“At Schindler we stongly believe in a shared global responsibility for creating urban environments – the inspiration for the Schindler Global Award. Engaging the challenges of the liveable and sustainable contemporary city through the SGA is part of our commitment in fulfilling this responsibility. We believe that the students of today will help create the cities of tomorrow. Participation in the SGA will motivate them and help them to realize their potential and the power of design to address essential urban questions” highlighted Uday Kulkarni, President, India & South Asia, Schindler India.
The Schindler Global Award 2018/2019 is held under the leadership of the Schindler Group, again in collaboration with the ETH Zurich, Chair of Architecture and Urban Design, Professor Kees Christiaanse. Prof. Christiaanse will act as SGA Co-Chair together with Prof. Peter Staub, University of Liechtenstein.
