New Delhi: Indian Parliamemnt members, including those from the ruling BJP, demanded a ban on the import of Chinese goods, on Monday in the Lok Sabha. They argued that those products were doing harm to the small and medium enterprises in India.
“China has smashed India’s small and medium enterprises as crooked importers are importing substandard things from China,” Tathagatha Satpathy of Biju Janata Dal said. He asked the Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to accompany him to the Khan market in Delhi and see how Chinese mobile handsets are available in abundance.
The issue was strongly raised by Bhola Singh, a BJP MP from Bihar.
However, Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that any blanket ban on imports from a country was not possible under the World Trade Organization norms. She, assured the members that steps are being taken to safeguard the interest of Indian manufacturers and consumers.
She said that import of Chinese milk products has been banned after irregularities were detected.
“On Chinese imports, we have taken specific actions. Import of parts of mobile phones have been stopped as certain parts used in them were unacceptable. Wind-operated electricity generators imported from China are under investigation,” she said.
