THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
Technopark, in collaboration with the International Centre for Free and Open Source Solutions (ICFOSS), has launched an advanced IoT-based flood monitoring system with an automated weather station to enhance disaster preparedness and mitigate flooding risks in the Thettiyar stream.
Following the 2023 floods that impacted Technopark’s operations, the system integrates radar-based water level sensors, automated rain gauges, and an automated weather station to monitor water levels, rainfall, and atmospheric conditions.
Strategically placed along the Thettiyar stream, these sensors provide real-time data through LoRaWAN communication, enabling continuous monitoring via a centralized dashboard. An automated alert mechanism issues SMS and email notifications when flood thresholds are exceeded, ensuring timely preventive action.
Technopark has also installed sensors in the Veli backwaters to compare water levels with sea levels, automatically alerting authorities if estuary breaching is required to prevent backwater flooding.
Moving forward, Technopark plans to integrate AI/ML-enabled predictive flood management module, reinforcing its commitment towards environment resilience and technological innovation.
The launch event was attended by Col Sanjeev Nair (Retd), CEO of Technopark; Dr Sunil T T, Director, ICFOSS; Madhavan Praveen, General Manager (Projects) Technopark; Abhilash M R, Manager (MEP) Technopark; Srinivasan R, Programme Head, ICFOSS and other officials of Technopark and ICFOSS.
