NEW DELHI:
The Election Commission is likely to soon initiate the process to elect the next Vice President of India, following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar.
While an official announcement is awaited, sources revealed on Tuesday that the Union home ministry has formally notified Dhankhar’s resignation, clearing the way for the poll process to begin shortly.
As per constitutional provisions, an election to fill the vacancy must be held “as soon as possible” in case of resignation, death, or removal of the sitting vice president.
Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down from the post on Monday, citing health reasons. His successor will be entitled to a full five-year term.
The vice president is elected by an electoral college comprising members of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, including nominated members.
Once the Election Commission issues a notification calling the electoral college to vote, the election process must be completed within 30 days.
To be eligible for the post, a candidate must be an Indian citizen aged at least 35 years and qualified to be a Rajya Sabha member. Individuals holding an office of profit under the central or state government or any local authority are barred from contesting.
