Amrita Hospital Observes World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2025

Amrita Hospital observed World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) 2025 with a series of programs aimed at strengthening awareness against the global health crisis of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). The week-long activities were designed to promote rational antibiotic use and reinforce the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (AMSP), which has been successfully implemented at the hospital over the past decade.

The active participation of doctors and other healthcare professionals has played a key role in the success of AMSP within the inpatient setting. However, recognising that the majority of antibiotic consumption and subsequent resistance originates in the outpatient sector, the hospital introduced several new initiatives aligned with the WHO’s special classification.

Key initiatives included prioritising Access-group antibiotics recommended by the WHO Expert Committee on Essential Medicines, integrating CDSS within AHIS to guide appropriate prescribing, and introducing blue-coloured antibiotic prescription envelopes to enhance visibility, accountability, and safe usage.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by Dr. Beena K.V. (Additional Medical Superintendent, Amrita Hospital, Kochi), Dr. Dipu T.S. (Professor and Unit Chief, Infectious Diseases), Dr. Merlin Moni (Associate Professor), and Dr. Kiran G. Kulirankal (Assistant Professor). An AMR-themed dance video was also showcased on the opening day. In connection with the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, actor Mohanlal shared a special antibiotic awareness video, adding momentum to the campaign.

Major events held throughout the week included a debate competition for PG doctors and clinical pharmacists, an Infection Control Quiz, and a social media–based AMR Awareness Reels Contest. These activities saw enthusiastic participation from a large number of individuals.

Additionally, comic booklets and AWaRe-themed badges reflecting this year’s message, “Act Now: Protect our Present, Secure our Future,” were distributed in the outpatient departments. Photo booths and wall pledge stations set up across the campus also attracted significant participation, further strengthening awareness.

By observing WAAW 2025, Amrita Hospital reaffirmed its commitment to protecting community health. Healthcare professionals, students, and staff are actively engaged in activities aimed at combating antibiotic resistance and promoting the responsible use of antibiotics.
