KOCHI:
Young artists from across South Asia are being invited to showcase their works on the global stage parallel to the biggest contemporary art event in the subcontinent, the 2018 edition of Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB), opening in December this year.
The Kochi Biennale Foundation (KBF) has announced an open call for project proposals for the third edition of the Students’ Biennale, an educational initiative that provides a platform for BFA and MFA students to produce, exhibit, and reflect on their works under the guidance of prominent curators.
Applications are invited from young artists and collectives, currently pursuing their BFA (third/fourth/final year) or MFA (first/second year). Selected projects will receive support in the form of a production grant and an opportunity to travel to Kochi for the Biennale.
This year the Foundation is welcoming student artists from other SAARC countries — Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar.
Curators Krishnapriya CP, Nishad M P, K P Reji, Sanchayan Ghosh, Shruti Ramlingaiah and Shukla Sawant will work with young artists from India, while Riyas Komu, KBF Secretary and KMB Director of Programmes, will select the works of young artists from other SAARC nations.
The 2018 Student’s Biennale is centred on the idea of “Making as Thinking”. Applicants are encouraged to respond to how a studio can be situated in the framework of the institution, and how the notion of making can become a process of responding to their context and reflecting beyond.
The Students’ Biennale is executed in association with Foundation for Indian Contemporary Art (FICA) and Foundation for Indian Art Education (FIAE), with the principal support of Tata Trusts.
Interested students can learn more about the programme and apply through the KBF website, www.kochimuzirisbiennale.org/students-biennale. The deadline for applications is July 31.
The Kochi-Muziris Biennale, known as the “People’s Biennale”, is curated this year by eminent artist Anita Dube. It will run for 108 days from 12/12/18 until 29/03/19. The exhibition will be supported by an ancillary programme of talks, workshops, film screenings, and music across a range of venues in Kochi.
