  • Combating Climate Change by Bamboo Cultivation in Kerala

By NE Reporter on February 22, 2019

    THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
In a bid to spread awareness about biodiversity conservation, the capital-based Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA) will organize a seminar on ‘Combating Climate Change by Bamboo Cultivation in Kerala’ on February 24, 2019. The seminar being organized with the support of the Kerala State Biodiversity Board, will get underway at the CISSA Seminar Hall at Udarasiromani Road, Thiruvananthapuram.

The one-day seminar aims at utilizing the potential of bamboo cultivation as a means for combating climate change. This will in turn help improve the production of bamboo resources utilizing the vacant space available in homesteads. Bamboo cultivation also generates employment and economic gains through value addition of bamboos in the long run.

Registrations will begin at 9.30 am. Rakhi Ravikumar, Deputy Mayor, Thiruvananthapuram, will inaugurate the event. The inaugural ceremony will be followed by a series of technical sessions. Sajan P B, Joint Director, Center of Science and Technology for Rural Development (COSTFORD), will make a presentation on ‘Use of Bamboo in Construction Industry’, while Dr. K C Koshy, Former Scientist, KSCSTE-JNTBGRI, will discuss the Package of Practices for Bamboo.

‘Biological Diversity Act and its Implication in Conservation’ will be addressed by Dr. K G Ajitkumar, Senior Programme Officer, Kerala State Biodiversity Board. Mujeeb Rahman M T, Engineer, Kerala State Bamboo Corporation Ltd, and N Sreekumar, Consultant, Cow-centric Bio-farming, will talk on ‘Multifarious Uses of Bamboo’ and ‘A Bamboo in Every Home Stead – Towards Carbon Neutral Homes’ respectively.

Post-technical sessions, the event will be open for feedback and interaction. The programme will conclude with a valedictory function. For more details on the event, contact 9447063824.
