THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
Interconnected devices should be provided with a high degree of smartness by enabling their adaptation and autonomous behaviour while guaranteeing trust, security, and privacy of the users and their data, according to Dr.-Ing Axel Sikora, a leading expert on the subject from Germany.
Delivering a lecture on the “Interoperability, Security and Reliability for a scalable Internet of Things” at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITM-K) here, Dr Sikora also dwelt on some of the challenging research issues of prime focus such as achieving full interoperability between interconnected devices. The talk, which focused on the immense potential of the Internet of Things (IoT), was organized recently in association with IEEE Communications Society, Kerala Chapter, and ACM Trivandrum Professional Chapter.
“There is a necessity to provide an efficient network architecture that helps develop many scalable, interoperable and predictable IoT applications,” said Dr. Sikora, who is from the Institute of Reliable Embedded Systems and Communication Electronics (ivESK), Offenburg University of Applied Sciences, Germany.
He also touched upon several of his projects with industrial partners connecting the IoT paradigm in diverse fields such as automotive and telemetry, industrial and process automation and in home and building automation. The presentation was attended by an elite audience comprising industrialists, practitioners and research scholars, who were passionate about the uprising technology.
The session offered an opportunity for researchers and industrialists to interact and collaborate with one of the most acclaimed industrialists with deep insights into the IoT. The IIITM-K is exploring the wider prospects of the IoT applications by taking up several important projects and trainings and internship programmes. It offers a healthy IoT research milieu and accommodates experts and researchers focusing on this area.
This technology is imbibed by several sectors in the country, including health, agriculture, rural development and buildings and irrigation. Dr. Sikora has been the Deputy Member of the Board and Head of the “Software Solutions” division at Hahn-Schickard Association of Applied Research, Germany since 2016.
