  • India Launches ‘Operation Brahma’ to Aid Myanmar After Devastating Earthquake

By NE Reporter on March 29, 2025

    NEW DELHI:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conveyed deep condolences over the tragic earthquake in Myanmar, which has claimed more than 1,000 lives.

Taking to X, PM Modi stated, “Spoke with Senior General H.E. Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar. Expressed our heartfelt sympathies for the devastating loss of lives caused by the earthquake.”

Under the Act East policy, India has swiftly launched ‘Operation Brahma’ to deliver emergency relief to Myanmar. On Saturday, over 15 tonnes of essential aid were dispatched following a series of powerful tremors that struck the nation on Friday.

Reaffirming India’s commitment to assisting its neighbors in times of crisis, PM Modi added, “As a close friend and neighbor, India stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in this challenging time. Disaster relief material, humanitarian aid, and search and rescue teams are being dispatched promptly under Operation Brahma.”

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed the operation’s commencement, stating that the first tranche of humanitarian assistance reached Yangon Airport on Saturday morning. “Operation Brahma is in motion. The first batch of aid from India has successfully arrived at Yangon Airport,” he posted on X.

The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized India’s role as a first responder, detailing that the relief consignment includes tents, blankets, sleeping bags, food packets, hygiene kits, generators, and critical medicines.

Transported aboard an Indian Air Force (IAF) C-130J aircraft from Air Force Station Hindon, the aid package comprises ready-to-eat meals, water purifiers, solar lamps, generator sets, and vital medical supplies, including paracetamol, antibiotics, syringes, gloves, and bandages.

Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Bangkok is closely monitoring the situation in Thailand, where tremors were also recorded. Officials have confirmed that no Indian nationals have been affected. The Embassy has advised Indian citizens in Thailand to contact emergency services if required, reassuring that all Embassy personnel in Bangkok and the Consulate in Chiang Mai are safe.

India remains steadfast in its commitment to humanitarian aid, ensuring swift and effective support to its neighbors in distress.
