The National Institute of Speech and Hearing (NISH) conducted International Week of the Deaf 2019 and International Day of Sign Languages 2019 celebrations at its campus at Akkulam near here on Thursday.
Sheeba George, Director, Social Justice Department and Executive Director, NISH, inaugurated the programme.
In her address, Sheeba George said International Week of the Deaf and International Day of Sign Languages are meant for the empowerment and improvement of the marginalized section of the society. “Early detection of disability soon after birth is vital part of early intervention process. The aim of the Deaf Week celebrations is to create awareness about deafness, how to approach it and reduce it,” she said.
“Sign language is necessary for all to reduce the impact of deafness and to facilitate communication. It will help to build a relationship among teachers, students and others,” Sheeba added.
On the occasion, Sheeba released the video CD “Satyameva Jayate” that contains Gandhiji’s favourite bhajans in Indian Sign Language (ISL). Around 45 students from NISH have presented the bhajans in the video CD, which was launched in view of Gandhiji’s 150th birth anniversary.
Dr K.G. Satheesh Kumar, Director, Centre for Assistive Technology and Innovation (CATI), NISH, who presided over the function, noted the importance of spreading and evolving of sign language. “It has been only two to three years since the development and standardization of ISL occurred. The theme of International Day of Sign Languages 2019 is ‘Sign Language for All’.”
Sandeep Krishnan, ISL Teacher, NISH, spoke about Deaf Week. Sivadath, Ward Councillor, Kulathoor, was also present. Daisy Sebastian, Academic and Early Intervention Coordinator, NISH, welcomed the gathering, and Raji Gopal, Coordinator, Degree (Hearing Impaired), NISH,proposed a vote of thanks.
