  • KIMSHEALTH Opens Multi Organ Transplant ICU

By NE Reporter on December 17, 2021

    THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
KIMSHEALTH opened its Multi Organ Transplant ICU and Operating Room, besides launching the organ transplant foundation to mark the completion of 500 renal transplantations by the multi-speciality hospital here on Thursday.

Transport Minister Antony Raju inaugurated the new facility and the organ transplant foundation ‘Sparsham-Gift A Life’, launched as part of the CSR activities of KIMSHEALTH. The Minister also released the logo of ‘Sparsham-Gift A Life’ at the function.

In his address, Raju stressed the need for creating proper awareness in the society about the organ donation as donors often shy away due to certain misconceptions.

“Unavailability of organs is a problem. The real challenge is how to bridge the gap between the number of donors and patients who need organs. The government will look into the scope of evolving a public-private-partnership (PPP) model to address this critical issue,” Raju said.

The Minister said the completion of 500 transplantations is a commendable achievement, which is a feather in the cap of KIMSHEALTH.

KIMSHEALTH Chairman and Managing Director Dr M.I. Sahadulla said around 505 transplantations have been done at the hospital so far. “As part of ‘Sparsham-Gift A Life,’ KIMSHEALTH will provide five free kidney transplants every year and will also give special focus on paediatric transplantations,” Dr Sahadulla said.

Noting that implementation of more projects on PPP model would yield significant progress in health sector, Dr Sahadulla added that the cooperation of the government is vital for such projects.

Dr G Vijayaraghavan, Vice Chairman – KIMSHEALTH, in his address, said KIMSHEALTH has come a long way in organ transplant, which is a less intricate process these days with the help of new technology and medicines.

Dr Satish. B, Head, Nephrology Department, KIMSHEALTH, said the hospital has carried out all kinds of advanced organ transplants, combined liver-kidney transplants and also kidney transplants across blood groups.

Dr Praveen Muralidharan, Medical Superintendent and Senior Consultant, Department of Nephrology; and Dr Renu Thomas, Head, Urology Department, were also present.

In November, KIMSHEALTH East launched a state-of-the-art critical care unit (ICU) with 85 beds, as the Covid-time crisis exposed gross inadequacy of such facilities in the country.

The ICU, accredited by National Board for Super-speciality Training Programme in Critical care and also by the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine, is managed by consultants 24/7. KIMSHEALTH is also a licensed centre for liver, heart and lung transplants.
