Committed towards providing reliable and quality power at affordable costs, Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy automation and management, has partnered with the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) to deliver an integrated and smart electrical distribution system to the cities of Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode.
As part of this project, Schneider Electric will install its state-of-the-art EcoStruxure SCADA/DMS architecture, that will help the state achieve the goal of providing reliable and quality power at competitive cost and facilitate adoption of global standards and regulations in bringing down distribution losses.
According to the 19th Electric Power Survey conducted by Central Electrical Authority, Kerala’s overall energy consumption is expected to increase by 52% in the next 10 years. To meet this increasing demand, it is vital
to put in place a robust electrical distribution system that has the required scalability and can adapt to the requisite standards. With the proposed SCADA/DMS systems under Part A of R-APDRP, KSEB and Schneider Electric plan to improve the power quality in the state by providing 24×7 power supply, reduce power losses, thefts and outages by improving the safety and security of network switching options. This will be done by installing 14 substations, 1450 ring main units, 120+ 11 KV feeders and a main control center at Thiruvananthapuram city that will operate and monitor distribution substations and the network from a centralised location of each project area/town.
Speaking on the association, Anil Chaudhry, Zone President and MD, Schneider Electric India said, “We are delighted to partner with Kerala State Electricity Board and are confident of providing lasting solutions to ensure round the clock availability of electricity in the state. We are aware of Kerala’s unique challenges including the crisis caused by extreme rainfall and flash floods that disrupt power supply. To start with, we will implement our state of the art EcoStruxure ADMS in three key cities of Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode that will help provide reliable and quality power and cut down distribution losses.”
Through this project, Schneider Electric aims to provide reliable power supply in the three cities by installing their IoT enabled architecture that works at three levels:
Layer 1: 51 Nos of 33/11 kV Substations monitored by RTUs, 305 Ring Main Units monitored by Feeder RTUs, 550 Fault Passage Indicators (FPI) installed on overhead lines
Layer 2: Advanced Distribution Management (ADMS) and Geographical mapping of Distribution Network and assets on GIS
Layer 3: Command Control Center and Disaster Recovery Center
