NEW DELHI:
Delhi woke up to waterlogged streets and traffic jams after heavy rains hit several parts of the city as well as its surrounding areas in the wee hours of Tuesday.
Heavy rain accompanied by lightning was reported around the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, Teen Murti Bhavan and RK Puram, among other areas in the city. While a few schools in neighbouring Gurgaon gave students the day off due to bad weather, educational institutions in waterlogged areas like Dwarka closed early.
Delhi received 49.6 mm rainfall since Monday, causing several areas in Dhaula Kuan and Palam Mod to become waterlogged. A few commuters had a narrow escape after a tree crashed on a bus shelter near Connaught Place around 7.30 am.
The Delhi Traffic Police put out several alerts on Twitter after vehicular movement was affected due to flooding during rush hour. People heading towards the busy Delhi-Jaipur-Mumbai highway also encountered traffic congestion.
“Our team is trying to make the traffic movement smoother,” Gurgaon assistant commissioner of police Heera Singh told news agency IANS.
