It’s another Health Day and this time the World Health Organization puts in front of us the issue of diabetes with its current theme – “Halt the rise: Beat diabetes”.
Diabetes is a condition of high blood sugar level in the body due to insufficient production of insulin. The number of people diagnosed with the disease has been rising on a global basis with China (90 million) at the lead followed by India (61.3 million). The worldwide diabetic population has increased up to 15-25% and 7.8% in India alone.
Detection of the disease at a later stage has led to other health consequences in patients such as kidney failures, permanent blindness, amputation of limbs etc. These conditions affect the working population in every country adversely which is the cause for promoting the theme.
WHO has been successfully communicating major health concerns to the world through its striking themes every year. Founded on April 7, 1948, this organization has brought about significant changes in the field of public health ever since. It also releases an account of overall health of people in UN member nations. The first World Health Day was observed in 1950.
