  • Government, An Utter Failure in Rebuilding Kerala Post Floods: Hibi Eden

By NE Reporter on April 4, 2019

    KOCHI:
The government has been a disaster in reviving the state post floods, says UDF candidate Hibi Eden while he was visiting the farmers of Paravoor constituency which was completely affected by the calamity.

Hibi Eden said the flood in Kerala was a man-made one and the Amicus Curiae report of the High Court validates the statement of the UDF. The core cause behind such an extent of destruction is opening of dams without following any guidelines and it was not even communicated to respective representatives of people. The government did not take any appropriate actions to relocate people from coastal regions nor they did advice any safety measures. Even though real time updates were sent by the weather forecasting centre the government did take any actions regarding the same. He added, the government disregarded the public’s life and property and is responsible for such a scenario.

The calamity resulted in the death of 450 people and 100 times the loss in agricultural sector. The agricultural sector has been completely destroyed by the floods and a huge loss was incurred to the dairy farmers and cattle’s were lost. Hibi Eden said, farmers are still dealing with the disastrous scenario.

Dairy Farmers being the worst affected by the flood lost around 67 cattle’s from a group of 150 farmers in Chendamangalam Panchayat alone. Likewise,14 such groups of farmers lost their cattle’s and the extent of damage is evident from above said scenario.

It costs approximately 75,000 rupees for a good bred cow which gives 15 litres of milk. But the allowance provided by the government was only 30,000 rupees with a clause that the farmer will be receiving an allowance for only 3 cows’ irrespective of the number of cattle’s lost. When evaluated a farmer who lost 9 cows which costs 9,75, 000 rupees will receive a help of only 90,000 rupees. It’s been 7 months post floods, even the insufficient help is not received, the farmers expressed their agony.

Another important problem faced by the farmers is the survival of recovered cattle’s from the flood and no help has been received for their treatment.

    Hibi Eden Campaigns in Paravoor
The campaign of UDF candidate Hibi Eden started yesterday (03/04/2019) morning at 7.00am by paying homage to late Former Minister K T George on his Remembrance Day at Koonamaavu St. Philomena Church Cemetery. By 8.00am the constituency tour began from Paravoor Mannam Junction with a vehicle procession.

Visited Vedimara, Peruvaram where he was received by 90 years old Bhargavi amma. Hibi Eden sought blessings from her and thanked the public for the enormous welcome.

Hibi Eden was received with open arms in Thaiveppu, Perumbadanna Kavala, Mannuchira regions and left for Paravoor market. From there to Paravoor Kacheripady and requested for the support. By noon campaigned in Azhikkara, Kalikulangara, Parayaat localities and reached Ellathu colony. Interacted with the natives of the region and campaigned to Idimoola, Kadakkara, Kuzhippanam, Chathanaad regions.

Interacted with the worst affected group in the floods, dairy farmers of the locality. Hundreds of dairy farmers look forward to the funds that they never received and has been visiting the government institutions for the same. Hibi Eden assures necessary actions if he is elected to the parliament.

Later campaigned in Kothakulam, Kaitharam, Thrikkapuram, Cheriyapalli, Vazhikulangara, Athani, Vaniyakkad, Chemmayam, Chithirakavala and Varapuzha. The candidate received a grand welcome in Varapuzha with an escort of hundreds of two wheelers, crackers and Chendamelam.
