KOCHI:
The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) Kochi regional centre provided provisions sufficient enough to feed 2000 people in camps through a mess at Thevakkal.
NIO also provided 400 kits containing two weeks provisions kit and supplied it personally to poor people at various villages in and around Kochi. NIO officials also initiated super chlorination of 60 wells at Manjali, Kochi. The NIO regional office will do the analysis of water samples after a week from these wells. We are working closely with the district administration for developing well cleaning protocol and strategies in the flood affected areas. Towards this, mapping of wells in severely affected areas is initiated by coordinating volunteers from various research institutions such as CMFRI, CMLRE, CUSAT and KUFOS. The district administration organised a training and orientation program for volunteers at NIO. Mapping of wells would help developing strategies for cleaning the wells in coming days, says Dr. Pankajakshan, Scientist in Charge, NIO Kochi Centre.
We have stocked 5000 kgs of bleaching powder towards cleaning campaign. We advertised the availability of bleaching powder for free through various FM channels and WhatsApp groups. Out of which we already delivered 1800 kg to the needy along with the instructions/dosage for usage, Dr. Parvathy Venu, Secretary staff club of NIO Kochi Centre. NIO director, Dr. Sunil Kumar Singh has extended all the support of their staff from Kochi, Goa, Mumbai and Vizag towards flood relief activities in Kerala.
