VIJAYAWADA: Two Dalit brothers were tied to a tree, stripped and brutally assaulted in Amalapuram in Andhra Pradesh, on Monday. The condition of one of them continues to be critical. Their crime was skinning a dead cow that was electrocuted.

A vegetable vendor had engaged two dalits, Mokati Elisa and his brother Lazar, to skin a dead cow that had been electrocuted. They were attacked by around 100 cow vigilantes( Gau Rakshaks) while doing their assigned job.

It was only a week ago , Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a stern warning to the cow vigilantes in the country who attack dalits in the name of cows.

Modi had appealed to them in his speech: “If you have a problem, if you feel like attacking someone, attack me, not my Dalit brothers. If you want to shoot anyone, shoot me, not my Dalit brothers.”

His comment that “fake Gau Rakshaks” are “dividing the nation and should be isolated” had angered many cow vigilante groups across the nation.

In another development, the Indian Parliament will take up the the attacks on dalits in the country for discussion on Thursday.
