Kochi: The hardcore Hindu organisation RSS has called upon the Hindu community to do away with Fireworks and Elephant Parade now being conducted in temples in the name of religious customs. The editorial of the official organ of RSS Kerala unit, ‘Kesari’ has come out with a scating attack on such practices.

‘Kesari’ editotial termed fireworks and elephant parade as sheer acts of madness masquerading as customary practices.

Bursting of high decibel firecrackers worth ‘crores of rupees’ (sic)  even at very small temples is a crime against society, the editorial said.

Vedikettu (fireworks) at temples has no logic or relevance. It can only disturb the the devotees. Kathina Vedi ( bursting of crackers) at Sabarimala began as a necessity to ward off wild animals from the temples located in the forests but it was this customary practice which turned out into Vedi Vazhipadu (offering), Kesari editorial argues.

The editorial reminds Hindus that elephant is a wild animal which cannot be tamed completely and exhortsbelievers to stop torturing the animal with the scorching heat of the sun and burning torches and the deafening sound of firecrackers.
