January 27, 2020

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
Kerala’s Vimukthi mission, under the aegis of the Excise Department, is setting up 6,700 anti-drug clubs at the state’s libraries.

The clubs are intended to work as a deterrent against the menace of drug use. Vimukthi anti-drug clubs will be formed in libraries coming under the State Library Council who receive annual grants.

Library office-bearers, local grama panchayat members, sports and arts club office bearers, politicians, social and cultural workers will be the members of the clubs. The clubs will organise a function on January 30, the anniversary of the martyrdom of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, when an anti-drug pledge will be taken.

As a prelude to that, libraries will undertake an awareness campaign in their respective areas. Vimukthi Mission is organising this as part of its ‘Tomorrow’s Kerala, an Anti-drug Kerala’ campaign. At the local level, evening meetings and at the library level anti- drug conclaves will be held. A workshop will be conducted for those speaking at the local meetings.

Excise Minister T P Ramakrishnan will inaugurate the state-level workshop at the Government Guest House next Wednesday.
