KBF Presents Art Talk with François Mazabraud

KOCHI:
A context for the spaces that will hold their works is crucial to all artists. For François Mazabraud, whose works relay information from his wanderings, gaining perspective on the warrens and bylanes of the city is especially important.
The French installation artist – invited to participate in the upcoming third edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB), opening December 12, 2016 – will share insights into his practice and process at an Art Talk evkbfent here.
Titled ‘Inside the 4th wall’, the discussion – presented by the Kochi Biennale Foundation and supported by the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art – will begin at 5 pm on Wednesday, September 7 at BTH, Ernakulam. It will explore the gap between reality and fiction as transmitted through Mazabraud’s practice.
His oeuvre is characterised by the juxtaposing of symbols, temporalities and heterogeneous spaces: a city becomes an open book, its walls become pages and its districts become chapters. In this way, subtle interactions are composed between urban normalities and fiction.
“The talk will question how daily and systematic manners can be modified by the studio practice, when the experimental gesture, accident, and hazard inject new decisions inside the first rational plan,” Mazabraud said.
“I will talk about my interest for the gap between reality and fiction, the notions of secret and invisibility, while trying to produce tricky artworks that are both simple and complex, strange and familiar, hidden and displayed in the same time,” he added.
The talk will also discuss how attention is paid to things in the public space and on the influence played by the reception to an artwork in his practice.
“I’m the first critic of my work, who is often trying to be the third, close and inside the fourth wall,” Mazabraud said.
