KOCHI:
Google Play has included Learn Crafts and DIY app by Riafy Technologies in its global case studies, recognising the Kerala startup’s apt integration of artificial intelligence in creating engaging and effective learning experiences for people worldwide.

This recognition highlights Riafy’s innovative use of artificial intelligence (AI) in The Learn Crafts and DIY app based on the concept of ‘Do It Yourself’, simplified to make learning enjoyable and accessible. It leverages the power of generative AI to provide users with step-by-step instructions and guidance on various crafts and DIY projects. Riafy’s mission is to democratize AI in ways that make it accessible to businesses of all sizes.

To enhance the user experience, Riafy developed an AI-powered crafting coach that acts as a virtual assistant, offering real-time support and guidance to users. This AI coach was created by fine-tuning the PaLM 2 LLM (large language model) using Riafy’s own data in Vertex AI. Within weeks, Riafy integrated its R10 AI coach into the app. The AI coach was trained to provide 24/7 support and one-on-one assistance to empower more people to pick up hobbies and sustain them.

The Learn Crafts and DIY app goes beyond standard video explanations by providing simplified tutorials that aid users’ learning process and increase engagement. Users receive personalised suggestions, clarifications, encouragement, real-time feedback, and responses to individual questions, reducing the likelihood of them dropping off, reveals Riafy Technologies COO Neeraj Manoharan, noting the positive impact of integrating the personalized AI coach.

Within three months, the Learn Crafts & DIY Arts app experienced a significant decrease in 1-star ratings on the Play Store (from 9.2% to 6.3%) and an impressive 17% increase in app engagement, leading to a rise in premium subscriptions. The premium subscriptions contributed 14% growth in overall gross revenue worldwide, while the company also saw a 22.3% increase in ARPPU (average revenue per user).

Neeraj highlighted the positive user feedback received after integrating the AI coach. Users described the app as “helpful” and “easy to use”, appreciating the tailored guidance, encouragement, and answers to their questions. This enhancement made crafting more accessible and rewarding for users.

Riafy remains focused on ensuring continuous growth while maximizing user trials of the new AI coach. As part of these experiments, Riafy optimized store listings for specific holidays and seasons, including Christmas, New Year’s, Thanksgiving, Easter, Mother’s Day, Halloween, and Valentine’s Day. Additionally, the app was localized in 25 languages, primarily tier-1 languages such as English, French, Polish, Dutch, Italian, and German and used by 30 lakhs users in 177 countries.

KSUM, the nodal agency established by the Kerala government in 2006, supports entrepreneurship development and incubation activities in the state.
