THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
A 23-year-old-man gravely injured during a local scuffle was revived through surgery. The young man was miraculously brought back to life after a six hour long surgery at KIMSHEALTH Trivandrum.

The young man was mistakenly stabbed in his thigh during a conflict. When he was brought to the Emergency Department, his condition was critical, as the artery and vein of his right leg were cut into two, and had no heartbeat. Once the cause for the cardiac arrest was found to be the uncontrollable bleeding, the patient was brought back to life through a complex surgery in which his artery and vein were reconstructed.

The heartbeat was restored by administering CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) for 45 minutes with the help of blood transfusion. After maintaining blood pressure through the long process, emergency surgery was performed with coordination from different departments. The severed artery and vein were reconstructed using the vein from the patient’s left leg. Once the bleeding stopped, the patient’s condition improved, and the blood flow to the injured right leg returned to normal, regaining mobility. The patient was discharged after six days of follow-up.

The injury to the thigh muscle was deep, making the surgery very difficult. However, the young man was brought back to life through timely and expert intervention, said Dr. Rinett Sebastian K.V, Cardiothoracic Surgeon who led the surgery.. He also added that in such situations, there is a high risk of brain death in case the treatment gets delayed. Dr. S. Subash and Dr. Swapna Sasidharan, Consultants, Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, Dr. Sanoop Koshy, Consultant General Surgery, and Dr. Shalini S, Consultant, Emergency Medicine Department, were also part of this treatment.
