The Kochi-Muziris Biennale’s focus on gender issues enables the viewer to know more about society, while the works relating to the calamity in Kerala during last monsoon are a reminder of human tragedies, senior bureaucrat M Beena said today.

“These works and their thoughts must prompt the young generation to look at the country’s social and political problems with a fresh perspective. The ideas behind them plumb the depth of the reality around,” said Dr Beena, who is chairperson of the Cochin Port Trust.

“All the same, the biennale gives you the feeling of being in an imaginary world,” she said, praising the artistic merit of the 108-day festival that is on till March 29. “The videos and other installations are outstanding.”

Also a qualified medical practitioner, Dr Beena said the biennale showcases works on ideas that are not just ideas from one part of the country or region. “They portray a collision of culture and ideas from various corners of the world. Yet they are brought under a single theme,” she added.
